As excited I was for this show to come back on air, I was also a little nervous. For six seasons we had Elena, who ultimately was the main character of Vampire Diaries. But everything (and I mean everything) went to crap in the Season 6 finale. Elena is now in a somewhat limbo, connected to Bonnie Bennett. When Bonnie dies, Elena will finally awaken and continue her eternal life. I love how tasteful CW went with Nina Dobrev leaving the show. They didn't completely kill her off, instead put her character to rest for the remainder of this amazing TV series.
So now in Season 7, we have no Elena, which of course means a sad Damon. And Damon doesn't really have a sad side to him does he? He has his funny obnoxious yet dashing side, and his destructive murdering side. He's not really the type to have a sad poetic brooding side (Ahem, Stefan). So it's really interesting to see how Damon acts in this season premiere.
The season starts off 3 years later and we see Stefan coming into a storage room heading toward a coffin. When he opens it we see a sleeping Damon. Which is strange because unless you're an original with a special little dagger, this isn't that easy of a thing to accomplish.
The show then jumps back to present time, which takes place only a couple weeks after the horrible wedding disaster. Everyone seems to be doing alright, considering. The only character that I personally care about is Alaric. Everyone he ever loves is brutally murdered. And this time his wife and his unborn twins were murdered. Alaric is drinking his pain away in Amsterdam with bitter Damon. Or is he? We find out later that he's been drinking tea the entire time. Why? Well, Alaric has gone a little batshit crazy. We can't really blame him, after all the pain he's had to dealt with. While he's been in Europe with Damon and Bonnie, Alaric has been looking for a medium to communicate with his wife. How depressing can he be? Apparently Alaric is carrying a pink jewel, that has some major important qualities. We don't find out what this jewel can do, but learn that important people long for it.

Later on in the episode they make up and it's freakin' adorable because Damon admits that Bonnie is his best friend. I love team Bamon.
Back in Stars Hallow things seem to be working out fine. People are moving on with their lives. Stefan and Caroline are still not together. We've been waiting for a couple of seasons now. And we finally get what we've been waiting for. Toward the end of this episode they kiss. I don't know about you, but I yelled "Finally!" when this happened.
Everything is all fine and dandy in Stars Hallow until Lillian's little creepy family ruins everything. While everyone was dealing with wedding disaster, Lillian, with the help of Enzo, finally got her family back. Luckily Lillian wants to live with them in peace. They do well living in society under her orders, going unnoticed to our beloved vampires. But this is a television drama, so of course the vampires crack. One of the vampires gets hit by a car, and the high teenagers drive off, leaving the bitter vampire behind. Never hit and run! Especially when you hit an old angry vampire. When the vampire tells her family, three of them set out to kill the teenagers. They leave the two to be found by Stefan and Caroline. And the war begins.
Stefan builds a bomb for them, using Alaric's old vampire hunting supplies. Seems like a good idea but it ultimately doesn't work. These aren't just your average vampires. They are heretics. Witch plus vampire. Yep, we got our basic vampires, original vampires, werewolf vampires, and now witch vampires. There are several possibilities in this universe.
After surviving the bomb attempt, the heretics are furious and revengeful. They go to poor Matt's police ceremony where dozens of people are becoming police officers. This event is crashed by these vampires and people run away screaming or they are brutally murdered. Poor Matt, can he never have a normal human moment? Lillian shows up toward the end and is angry and disappointed with her vampire family. I feel for the first time sympathy for Lillian. All she wants to do is live in peace with her weird vampire family.
After this happens Stefan and Caroline realize that this town isn't safe for anyone. And there's nothing they can do about it. Except evacuate the entire city. They come up with an excuse to get rid of all the people in this small town. It's all very defeating. And when Damon and Bonnie show up, they are not on the same page as Stefan and Caroline. They even murder one of these heretics. Bonnie distracts one of them and Damon swiftly rips his heart out. Of course the heretics find out and start plotting their revenge. Enzo does as well, and tells Caroline about the murder of the heretic. Then he suddenly sticks a syringe in her.
The episode ends back in the storage room 3 years later. Stefan wakes Damon up and Damon annoyingly says, "I told you not to bother me until Elena was awake,". Which I can't wait to see what events lead to Damon giving up and deciding to sleep away the wait. What's even more interesting is the bad ass woman vampire hunter. The reason Stefan woke Damon up was to save him from this hunter. Apparently they've been running from her for awhile. You only see the silhouette of her in the door frame but Damon and Stefan know who she is. They hide behind a coffin, unsure how to escape this mysterious woman.
I really enjoyed this episode. Although it felt weird watching Vampire Diaries without Elena, this show still holds up. I'm intruiged to watch where this season goes. Let me know what you thought of the Vampire Diaries Season 7 premiere!
