Every since I was old enough to decide what to watch on TV, it has been mostly "Sitcoms". I have been watching plain old sitcoms for years now, and still enjoy reruns on at Nick @ Nite. Sitcoms have taught me many things over the years, and have helped me find who I am. Before I get started, we should probably establish what a Sitcom is!
According to Dictionary.com, a sitcom is technically a 'situation comedy'. A situation comedy is "a comedy drama especially a television series made up of discrete episodes about the same group of characters, as members of a family" (Dictionary.com). Pretty simple definition I would say! If you are still not understanding, here are a few examples:
- 'How I met Your Mother'
- 'Roseanne'
- 'Friends'
- 'Family Matters'
- 'Full House'
- 'The Addams Family'
- '2 Broke Girls'
- 'Gilligan's Island'
Most of you, have probably seen at least 1 episode of a sitcom!
I love sitcoms because they are so heart warming. After a while you connect with the characters and can not get enough of them. You get to watch their struggles, happiness, and even silly adventures they might encounter. Sitcoms are also so lovable because not only are they heart warming, but you can relate to them. Whether it's that quirky female with 5 friends, or a single father of 3 kids, you can always find the sitcom that relates to you the most/
I have fallen in love with sitcoms, but what have they taught me?
Family Matters
Sitcoms have taught me that your family matters! And I am not talking about the wonderful show "Family Matters". I do mean, however, that situation comedies have taught me family values. For example, full house is a great example of family. This whole show is around the idea that family is the most important thing. It taught me that money, friends, and even lovers may desert you. But family is always going to be there. Family is something you can not lose easily, and you should respect and love the one you have.
Keep Positive People Around
Some of never got the chance to have close ties with family. Another important aspect I have learned is that we all need to have close ties with people other then blood. Having personal relations with others, makes our lives more exciting! As long as those people are positive. In all the sitcoms surrounding friendship (How I Met Your Mother), the characters are supporting of each other. They are also positive and most of all, they care about each other. It taught me what I wanted and valued in friendship.
Be Genuine
I believe that everyone should be kind and just plain genuine to everyone. Being outwardly mean for no apparent reason, doesn't get us anywhere. Sitcoms usually show the good guys versus the bad guys. The good always won in the end, which should teach us all a thing or two about kindness!
More Sense of Human Actions
I have seen a numerous amount of sitcoms. I have learned so much about human interaction, without actually interacting with people! Haha. Reading people is a great advantage, because you can see a person's emotion without asking. Therefore, you can help someone who is too shy to speak up about the way they feel. It is also a great advantage for acting!
Sitcoms have always been in my life, and they have taught me many important lessons. Not only have these shows made me a better person, they have entertained me when times in my own life were tough. I have connected with so many characters, and learned from watching their experiences. Now I can go out on my own, and have my own experiences. Keeping in mind what these 'fake' characters went through :)
So here is a list of my top 5 sitcoms. Just for fun!
- How I Met Your Mother
- Roseanne
- Friends
- Boy Meets World
- Modern Family
