Well, this episode starts off again with three years from the present. Which I do love, I won't lie. But gawwwdd I just want to know what the hell is going on. I guess that's the point in television, to keep us viewers intrigued and wanting more. Genius I say! Because I'm hooked.
In the future Stefan is freaking out over this hunter. He calls Tyler (long time no see wolfy) from his car and asks him if he's heard from Caroline. She needs to be warned about the danger coming but won't take Stefan's calls (episode 2). Tyler sternly tells Stefan he doesn't want to get involved in whatever is going on between Stefan and Caroline. But agrees to warn her about whatever is coming. This three years into the future scene ends with Stefan grabbing his things from his car and blowing it up. Leaving the evidence behind? Hiding his tracks? Who knows.
Back in modern times, Damon is crashing with Alaric. Bonnie is over, and asks Alaric once again if he destroyed the Phoenix Stone. Alaric lies again and this time Damon notices something unusual. Damon ultimately figures out that Alaric still has the stone but doesn't tell Bonnie.
Even though there's this big secret between the three of them, they all head to the ocean to find the missing heretic. They plan to kidnap this heretic and trade him in for Elena's sleeping body (couldn't not make that sound creepy). They find the heretic by using Lily's cell phone information and find the missing heretic. And this man is not what they expected. He's a laid back hippy guy who already knows Damon. Instead of immediately grabbing him to make the switch, they hang back to find out how he knows Damon.
We go back to the 1800's, before Damon and Stefan were made vampires by the manipulative Catherine (I so miss that character). At first when Lily faked her death and left her sons, she felt guilty. So when she got her new family she sent one to Damon and one to Stefan to see how her boys were doing. This heretic, Oscar, was the one that checked up on Damon. He talked to Damon about fighting in the Civil War and gave him courage to leave fighting for the South, even if it will disappoint his father.
When Damon finally realizes how he knows Oscar, Bonnie asks him for a favor. She is desperate to get rid of her visions after passing out for 12 minutes because of one recently. She hopes to get rid of these nasty visions by asking Oscar to cipher her visions away. Oscar agrees but it goes bad quickly. He sees the evil visions when attempting to cipher the visions. Oscar immediately asks where the phoenix stone is. He knocks all three of them out and steals the stone that Alaric was hiding.
When they wake Bonnie finds outs that Alaric has been lying this entire time. She also gets mad at Damon who immediately throws his hands up and let the two of them hash it out. Later they make up and even though Bonnie doesn't like it, she agrees to help Alaric bring back Jo.
Even though Oscar made a quick getaway, they find them and 'kidnap' him. They put an IV on him with vervain in it to keep him sound asleep. Damon calls Lily to tell her he's captured her 'son' and wants Elena back. But then Valerie shows up and knocks Damon out and murders Oscar. Oscar has a secret that Valerie didn't want told.
While the trio is looking for this heretic, we find out what happened between Stefan and Valerie. Last episode Caroline found a passage in Stefan's journal about Valerie. Valerie tells Caroline their story while Stefan tells his side to Lily. When Lily sent Oscar to check up on Damon, she also sent Valerie to look after Stefan. This was before either of them became vampires, and they fall in love. But Lily's lover at the time, Julian, was also watching them. He is against this union because all Lily wanted was to make sure her son was okay. He's also a huge jerk, and we learn how much of a jerk he really is.
Stefan and Valerie run away and make love, which was Stefan's first time. They part but promise to see each other again. Some time passes and Valerie sends a telegram to Stefan, telling him to meet her so they can run away together. But she never showed up, making Stefan believe she blew him off. But she didn't. Julian shows up and blocks her when she tries to meet Stefan. He, having supreme hearing, and hears a second heartbeat. Meaning Valerie is pregnant with Stefan's baby! So crazy. But it doesn't last long when Julian beats her to near death, killing her unborn child. She never makes it to Stefan, and Julian drags her to the ship the rest of Lily's family is waiting. He tells Lily that someone else beat her up, and they leave. Later Valerie kills herself, but has Lily's blood in her system. This is where she becomes the first heretic.
After all that chaos we can see why Valerie hates Julian. This is why she kills Oscar, because he is the only one that knows where Julian is. Lily sent him to find Julian, and he was just about to tell them where he was at. Which is really sad, Oscar was the only heretic that I liked!
Stefan pretends to be mad at Damon extremely well, and connects with Lily. Lily grows a heart and lets Caroline go. Finally! She immediately goes to Stefan and they talk about Valerie. He tells her it's all in the past, so it doesn't matter. But he doesn't know she was pregnant, and thinks she stood him up. I'm hoping when he finds out it won't matter, but Stefan has too big of a heart to not let it matter. Caroline still has weird vervain skin, and Stefan can't touch her. Making their reunion bittersweet. Hopefully Bonnie can help lift this curse.
I really enjoyed this episode. I'm glad we found out what was going on between Stefan and Valerie. I can almost be certain that this will blow up in everybody's face. I can't wait!
